STYLISTIC EXERCISE
Find out two metaphoric words in the two following paragraphs, explain their functions, and translate into Vietnamese
(6) We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America that the fierce urgency is now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promise of democracy.
(7) Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to life our Nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God`s children. a) tranquilizing drug:
→ literal sense: drug used for relieving pains
→ metaphoric sense: relieve somebody’s mind by using vain promises without ever truth.
In this paragraph, the writer wants to say that the tranquilizing drug is untrue, and if any, it is just a form of extending the time to cover rights for all men.
b) quicksand:
→ literal sense: deep wet sand that you sink into if you walk on it
→ metaphoric sense: a very bad status of a society, a chaos of society hard to resolve.
In this paragraph, the writer thinks it unjust for all black men because they have no their own rights. They are living in a society of darkness without justice light.
The writer in fact uses these two words as metaphoric devices profoundly. They require the readers not only to have a good background to perceive the quintessence but also to have the deep thought of his words in his speech.
The translation is as follows:
(6) Giờ đây chúng ta cũng có mặt tại nơi linh thiêng này để nhắc nhở nước Mĩ về sự cấp thiết đó. Giờ không phải là lúc đắm chìm trong sự xa hoa của sự trấn an, xoa dịu hay là lúc chậm rãi uống những viên thuốc an thần. Giờ là lúc phải hiên thực hóa lời hứa của nền dân chủ.
(7) Giờ là lúc chúng ta phải bước ra khỏi hố sâu tăm tối chia rẽ tính dân tộc để bước tới đài vinh quang của ánh sáng công lý. Giờ là thời khắc đưa dân tộc chúng ta từ vũng lầy bất công và kỳ thị tới một nền tảng vững chắc của tình đoàn kết anh em. Giờ là thời điểm phải hiện thực hóa bản chất công lý cho tất cả những người con của Chúa.
